For carriers whose paperwork never stops

Owner-operators and small fleets carry more recurring filings than almost any other small business. We keep them on schedule and make sure you are paying the right tax.

Public utility tax, not B&O

RCW 82.16

Washington taxes hauling for hire under the public utility tax, with its own classifications, instead of the B&O tax most businesses pay. Interstate hauls are generally deductible.

Filing under the wrong tax or claiming the wrong deductions is common, and expensive to unwind.

IFTA quarterly returns

Apr 30Jul 31Oct 31Jan 31

Every quarter you report miles and fuel by jurisdiction. Clean mileage and fuel records make the return a routine filing instead of a scramble, and protect you in an IFTA audit.

Heavy-vehicle use tax

Form 2290

Trucks at 55,000 pounds or more owe federal heavy-vehicle use tax. The annual return is due by August 31, and a newly placed truck is due by the end of the month after its first use. You need the stamped Schedule 1 to register.

Per diem and equipment

80% M&IE§179

Drivers subject to DOT hours-of-service rules can deduct 80% of the meals-and-incidentals per diem while away from home overnight. Trucks and trailers can often be deducted in the year you buy them. Both depend on good records and timing.

Bookkeeping by truck

Per-unit P&L

Revenue, fuel, repairs and payments by truck show which units and lanes actually make money, and what you can afford when a lease or purchase comes up.
